The Rapid ResponseTM Procalcitonin (PCT) Test Cassette is a rapid, semi-quantitative test for the detection of PCT peptide in serum or plasma. It is intended for in vitro diagnostic use. Interpretation of test results are: positive (two lines), negative (one line), invalid (no lines or no Control line). Positive results are interpreted by comparing the intensity of the Test Line (T) to the reading card provided.
Procalcitonin (PCT) is a peptide present in the blood stream of healthy individuals below the concentration of 0.08 ng/mL. The level of PCT rises in response to inflammation from bacterial origin (but not viral origin) concentrations of 1 – 50 ng/mL plasma. Measurement of PCT is useful as a marker of severe sepsis caused by bacteria and also correlates with the degree of sepsis.
The limit of detection for the Rapid ResponseTM Procalcitonin (PCT) Test Cassette is 1 ng/mL of serum or plasma. The test is useful in distinguishing between systemic infections (such as Lower Respiratory Tract Infections) caused by bacteria as opposed to those caused by viruses, thus aiding in decision making on the correct intervention, such as antibiotic therapies.
Point-of-care healthcare providers, including general practitioners, emergency room physicians and respirologists may benefit from the rapid determination of PCT in patient serum/plasma.
